Open geothermal energy: harness the thermal energy of the water table
At WellDoneDrill, we’re experts in groundwater geothermal energy in Belgium. We install systems that harness the thermal energy contained in groundwater to efficiently heat and cool buildings.
Open geothermal energy is based on a groundwater collection and reinjection circuit, guaranteeing optimum energy efficiency while respecting the environment. Suitable for large-scale infrastructures, this solution offers high efficiency with a reduced carbon footprint.
How does open geothermal energy work?
Open geothermal energy consists in pumping water into a water table, capturing part of the thermal energy and reinjecting the pumped water. This highly efficient system is suitable for medium to large-scale projects (over 100kW).
Here’s how it works:
- Groundwater withdrawal : Water is pumped from the water table through a borehole. This water contains natural thermal energy.
- Use of thermal energy Once the water has risen to the surface, it passes through a heat pump that extracts the heat to heat buildings or produce domestic hot water.
- Water re-injection After the heat has been extracted, the water is reinjected into the water table via a reinjection borehole, without altering its quality.
Your open geothermal energy project in 5 easy steps
Study and free estimate
We carry out an in-depth hydrogeological study to analyze the availability and quality of groundwater resources. Exploratory drilling and the installation of piezometers enable us to assess the potential of your land. Following this analysis, you will receive a clear, detailed quotation.
Contact a heat pump installer
Once feasibility has been confirmed, you’ll be put in touch with an installer who specializes in ground-source heat pumps. We can also refer you to our trusted partners for optimized, high-performance installation.
Offer validation and sizing
You validate the selected offer with your installer and our team. We carry out the precise sizing of the system. This step guarantees an installation perfectly adapted to your building’s needs and available resources.
Drilling of collection and reinjection wells
Once the offer has been validated, we drill the boreholes required to install the collection and re-injection wells. We install the necessary equipment (pumps, valves, sensors) and carry out pumping tests to ensure that the system is working properly.
Make the most of your geothermal system
We commission the system. Your geothermal system is now operational! You benefit from efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly heating and cooling.
Groundwater, a natural energy resource
Open geothermal energy, an efficient and environmentally-friendly solution, uses groundwater from the water table as an energy carrier to heat and cool buildings. With WellDoneDrill, take advantage of this renewable resource to optimize your comfort while reducing your energy footprint.
What's the difference between open and closed geothermal systems?
Open geothermal energy uses groundwater to extract heat, while closed geothermal energy uses closed-circuit probes that capture heat from the ground without interacting with groundwater. Unlike closed geothermal energy, where probes are installed in the ground, open geothermal energy relies on the direct extraction of groundwater.
Where and when to use groundwater geothermal energy?
Open geothermal energy is particularly well suited to large-scale projects where energy demand is high. Here are a few examples of fields of application:
- Commercial and industrial buildings Ideal for factories, warehouses, offices and shopping centers, a geothermal installation meets the high energy requirements of these infrastructures.
- Residential complexes This is an economical and efficient solution for heating and cooling apartment buildings and large complexes.
- Hospitals and care centers It ensures a stable temperature all year round, essential for these establishments.
- Schools and public buildings Energy efficiency is a key factor in our success: it helps reduce energy costs while adopting a sustainable approach.
- Agricultural projects It heats greenhouses and maintains optimum growing conditions, even in winter.
- Urban thermal energy networks The urban thermal energy network supplies urban centers with stable, renewable heat.
What are the feasibility requirements for a groundwater geothermal project?
The feasibility of a geothermal installation on groundwater depends mainly on the presence of a groundwater resource accessible at a reasonable depth and whose level remains stable over time. The water table must offer sufficient flow to allow extraction and reinjection without upsetting its natural functioning. Compliance with environmental and administrative regulations is essential to the viability of the project.
What are the advantages of open geothermal energy?
Efficient, economical and sustainable, this type of geothermal system is the energy alternative of choice for many projects thanks to its many advantages:
- High energy efficiency Thanks to the constant temperature of the groundwater, this geothermal system offers a very high level of efficiency, particularly suited to large buildings.
- Ecological solution By exploiting a renewable resource and minimizing CO₂ emissions, geothermal energy is a sustainable, environmentally-friendly solution.
- Heating and cooling This system can be used for both heating in winter and cooling in summer, thanks to the reversal of the process.
